Michael Brown Khacchad:Mule (UK) 01:23:00
In Nepal, over 100,000 equines are regularly put to work labouring in brick factories and carrying goods into the high Himalayan mountains. Film-maker Michael Brown travelled alone, following the mules every step of the way, from their birth in India, their sale at the huge Barabanki Fair in Uttar Pradesh, their journey to the brick factories in the Kathmandu Valley, and finally portering as pack animals in the high Himalayas. Sometimes joyful and at times heartbeaking, this film is a beautiful and moving portrait of Nepals working mules and the diverse communities that make their living with them. Without making judgements on people, communities or cultures this film does raise questions about humanity and our relationship with animals.
Mark Rose Alaska Long Hunters (USA) 59:11
This award winning story follows the life of a young pilot who flew in Alaska’s frontier arctic. Experience the front-seat thrills of bush planes and helicopters operating in the most dangerous conditions on earth, airborne among the magnificent mountains, glaciers and rivers that only Alaska has to offer. Includes true-life experiences of accidents, comradeship, humor and heartbreak of life in early Alaska, gone forever when dismantled into parks in the 1980’s. Based on the book Last of the Long Hunters by Mark Rose, the scene opens with an early history of the Great Land and those that lived in it through interviews with several life-long Alaskans, including Hilda Lidner, Ray Atkins and Gale Ranny to name a few. Leading up to the introduction of the authors use of a new tool of transport – the single engine airplane, but not without extracting a terrible price.
Sean Whitaker Buddha of the Chadar (UK) 27:53
A father and son from the Indian Himalayas embark on a winter pilgrimage along an ancient way to deliver a heavy bronze Buddha statue to a remote mountain monastery. They follow a route called the Chadar along the frozen surface of the River Zanskar and through its deep gorges. The film is a celebration of the Chadar and an affirmation of the Buddhist faith, as well as an historical record of this ancient way, soon to be rendered obsolete by regional road-building schemes. The dialogue is in Ladakhi, with English subtitles.
